Traditional Rajasthani musicians are well known for their mastery of instruments made of metal and wood. Their traditional attire consists of a long tunic, salwar kameez, pajamas and a turban. Their musical instruments include a tavil, ghatam, kanjira and dholkis. The tavil is a three-stringed instrument that gives off a deep sound when played with body pressure. The ghatam is similar to the violin, but it’s played with hand pressure instead of body. The kanjira is an Indian copper instrument that resembles an Indian hammered dulcimer. Its strings are often copper as well since copper has a mellow tone and rings softly when struck with a mallet- like hand tool. Last but not least, the dholkis is basically a conch shell that produces a distinct sound when blown.
